Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN)

History

The Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN) was launched in 2002 to pool, analyse and share nuclear safety information, existing and new knowledge and practical experience among the countries.

The current participating countries are Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Australia, France, Germany and the USA are ANSN supporting countries. Pakistan is an associate country in activities related to the safety of nuclear power plants and/or strengthening their regulatory frameworks.

Objectives

The primary objective of ANSN is to pool, analyse and share nuclear safety information, existing and new knowledge and practical experience among the countries. Moreover, the ANSN is expected to be a platform for facilitating sustainable regional cooperation and for creating human networks and cyber communities among the specialists of those countries. Development of a regional capacity building system composed of knowledge network, regional cooperation and human networks will serve for enhancement of nuclear safety infrastructures in the participating countries and will serve eventually for ensuring and raising the safety levels of nuclear installations in the region. The ANSN has recently expanded to become a forum for broader safety strategy among countries in the region.

Management

The ANSN Plenary is the highest-level organ and is not a standing committee. The ANSN Plenary is responsible for high-level strategic planning, in order to fulfil the needs of ANSN member states for sustainable nuclear safety infrastructure.

The ANSN Steering Committee (SC) is a standing committee and is responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of ANSN activities.

The ANSN Self-Assessment Coordination Group encourages and supports ANSN member countries in implementing the ‘ANSN Self-Assessment Process’, providing appropriate guidance.

Nine Topical Groups are currently working in specific thematic areas to promote the ANSN at the forefront through holding regional workshops and training courses and finding practical and sustainable solutions to emerging issues and exchanging their experiences in respective areas.

The establishment of the Topical Group on Radiation protection and Transport safety (RTTG) was approved at the SC meeting in 2017. The scope of RTTG activities includes radiation protection and transport safety issues related to handling of radiation sources originating from nuclear installations.
