Guidance Material

Body Composition

Here you will find the most up to date field and laboratory procedures as recommended by IAEA and applicable to the analytical instrumentation provided by IAEA. You will also find some Excel spreadsheets that can aid your daily work for dose preparation, laboratory analysis and calculation of body composition.

IAEA recommended procedures for deuterium dilution (Portable FTIR)

This file presents the recommended field and laboratory procedures for the portable FTIR. It has a step-by-step guide as well as considerations for each step. There are four chapters:

  1. General introduction
  2. Field procedure for 0-2 years
  3. Field procedure for 2+ years
  4. Laboratory procedures

Laboratory dose record example

This is a tool that you can use when preparing the diluted deuterium oxide, to keep track of deuterium doses, and prepare a calibration curve.

The calculations, graphs and fixed values are password protected to avoid unintentional mistakes, but you can unlock the file by the password D2Olab if you wish to intentionally make any adjustments.

Laboratory quality sheet example

This is a tool to support the daily monitoring of the laboratory analysis of QC standards.

The calculations, graphs and fixed values are password protected to avoid unintentional mistakes, but you can unlock the file by the password D2Olab if you wish to intentionally make any adjustments.

TBW Calculation template Nov 2023

This file is used to calculate body composition from the deuterium dilution technique.

It consists of four tabs:

  1. Data - here you enter data and find the body composition calculations
  2. Variable labels – data dictionary, and explanation of the calculations
  3. Hydration factors – shows the hydration factors used to convert TBW to FFM
  4. Data quality – with some possible trouble shooting if quality checks are flagged

The variable names, formulas etc are password protected to avoid unintentional mistakes, but you can unlock the file by the password TBW if you wish to intentionally make any adjustments.
