Press Arrangements for IAEA Board of Governors Meeting on Director General Appointment, Starting 2 July 2009

The IAEA Board of Governors will convene a special meeting at the Agency´s Headquarters at 10:30 on Thursday, 2 July 2009, in the IAEA Boardroom, C04, at the Vienna International Centre.

The special meeting is reserved for the selection procedure for the appointment of the Director General of the IAEA.

The balloting procedure will be conducted in closed meeting.

Spokesperson Melissa Fleming Departs IAEA

Melissa Fleming, Spokesperson for the IAEA, today departs her position at the Agency after eight years in the role. She will now assume the role of Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva.

Having started at the IAEA in January 2001, she served through a dramatic era for the Agency, a time that included the run-up to the Iraq invasion in 2003, the IAEA winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, and several nuclear verification challenges.

A successor to Ms. Fleming will be named in the coming months.

Press Arrangements for IAEA Board of Governors Meeting, Starting 15 June 2009

The IAEA Board of Governors will convene a regular meeting at the Agency´s Headquarters at 10:30 on Monday, 15 June 2009, in the IAEA Boardroom, C04, in the Vienna International Centre.

Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will open the meeting with an introductory statement. His statement will be released to journalists after delivery and posted on the IAEA website the same day.

FAO/IAEA Symposium to Address Animal Production and Health

An international Symposium to be held in Vienna next week will focus on the use of nuclear technologies to enhance animal nutrition and reproduction strategies and to detect and control animal-origin diseases that can be transmitted to humans, such as swine and avian influenza.

IAEA Press Briefing on Radiation Protection for Patients

IAEA Radiation Safety experts together with a leading US Diagnostic Radiologist will brief journalists at IAEA headquarters in Vienna on Wednesday, 29 April, at 10:00 in room B0709, on new initiatives to enhance patient protection in the face of increased use of ionizing radiation in diagnostic x-rays. As a key coordinating body of radiation protection for patients, the IAEA is leading several programmes designed to explore the impact of new technologies in medicine and to minimize the risks.

IAEA Conference to Focus on New Techniques in Cancer Treatment

About 400 cancer therapy specialists from 100 countries (96 IAEA Member States, 4 non-Member States) will meet next week in Vienna at an IAEA event to discuss modern techniques in radiation treatment of cancer.

The three-day International Conference on Advances in Radiation Oncology (ICARO) will start on Monday, 27 April, in the new Conference Building M of the Vienna International Center.

Media representatives accredited to the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century are kindly invited to a press briefing at 17:30 on Sunday, 19 April.

IAEA Deputy Director General Mr. Yuri Sokolov, OECD NEA Deputy Director for Science and Development Mr. Thierry Dujardin, CAEA International Cooperation Department Director Mr. Huang Wei and the Conference Scientific Secretary Mr. Ian Facer will brief journalists on the issues to be discussed during the conference.

IAEA Beijing Conference to Focus on Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century

Thirty energy ministers and the representatives of over 65 countries will convene in Beijing from 20 to 22 April to discuss the current status and future prospects for nuclear power. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei and OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria will also attend.

The International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century, organized by the IAEA, will be hosted by the Government of the People´s Republic of China in co-sponsorship with the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
