United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

The UNIDO and the IAEA support their common Member States in using nuclear technology for peaceful uses, such as food and agriculture, water and environment, and industrial applications.

Support extends to trade-related capacity-building, and to capacity-building in energy planning, industrial safety, waste management, decommissioning and environmental remediation, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The IAEA and the UNIDO also cooperate in several specific areas, notably cleaner industrial production, which aims to improve the environment by reducing the impact of industrial production processes.

Furthermore, the two organisations build awareness of the links between nuclear technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and share relevant data and methodologies through publications, tools and databases, training and events. They collaborate on outreach activities within the framework of UN-Energy and the Vienna Energy Club, and on the development and implementation of relevant quality infrastructure and conformity assessment services (testing, certification and accreditation) as well as quality management systems to help their common Member States to apply international standards as reference in their processes.

The IAEA and the UNIDO formalized this cooperation through Practical Arrangements signed in June 2020 and September 2012.
