By 2025 the ocean will contain one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish, and by 2050, there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Landfills are often brimming with plastic waste and pose an environmental threat to rivers, groundwater and the ocean.

In Sri Lanka, women play a critical role in driving rural communities' economic development and ensuring food security. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Sri Lanka is largely self-sufficient in animal products except in dairy, where national consumption has steadily grown since the 1970s, outpacing supply. Boosting dairy production in the country will help empower women in rural areas and improve the country’s self-reliance.

Organized jointly with UNESCO, and the co-operation of FAO, an IAEA Scientific Conference on the Disposal of Radioactive Waste at Sea convened Member States and experts at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in November 1959. This was the first time this important topic was discussed and would ultimately lead to the foundation of its first International Laboratory of Marine Radioactivity in 1961. The opening of the IAEA's marine laboratories in Monaco that same year marked the start of a new era for marine environmental research.

Radioactive material can end up on crime scenes as a result of intentional malicious acts such as theft or trafficking of material. It can also be the result of criminals causing unintentional damage to machinery that contains radioactive sources. Regardless of the cause, a crime scene at which radioactive material may be present, requires special care. In cooperation with the Armenian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the IAEA created a mock crime scene with radioactive material and contaminated evidence to simulate investigation and evidence collection in a safe and secure manner.

On 10 December 2019 the IAEA accepted its second and final delivery of a shipment of low-enriched uranium (LEU) at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. The IAEA LEU Bank aims to provide assurance to countries about the availability of nuclear fuel.

The delivery completes the planned stock of the material that the IAEA LEU Bank will hold, following the first shipment received in October 2019.

The IAEA verifies that nuclear material remains in peaceful use. To do this, nuclear safeguards inspectors regularly carry out on-site inspections at nuclear facilities around the world. Safeguards inspectors undertake regular training to ensure that they have the knowledge and experience to carry out inspections. Around half an hour drive from Tblisi, Georgia, sits the Andronikashvili Institute of Physics (pictured). The IAEA regularly holds week-long training courses for inspectors at the institute on how to apply nuclear safeguards to hot cells and gloveboxes.

Every year the United Nations commemorates World Oceans Day to mark the importance of the oceans in our everyday lives. The focus of this year's World Oceans Day is 'Gender and the Ocean.' At the IAEA Environment Laboratories, women and men work side by side to help Member States use nuclear techniques to characterize some of the environmental threats our oceans face. Women and men equally make up half of the staff members at the Laboratories, including at the Section Head level.
