General Service Staff At IAEA

General Service Staff at the IAEA

International Public Service in an Enriching Environment

General Service staff members comprise approximately 1100 of the Agency's staff and provide the IAEA with administrative, technical and scientific support. Their organizational abilities, interpersonal skills and responsiveness to logistical and administrative requirements make an indispensable contribution to the smooth running of the Agency.

All General Service candidates are recruited on a LOCAL BASIS, which means that they legally reside in the country of the duty station at the time of application.

General Service Job Opportunities

Careers in the General Services are open to laboratory technicians, secretaries, programme management assistants, administrative support staff, and other support personnel.

All candidates must possess the required relevant work experience in their field, preferably in an international work environment.

Good knowledge of both verbal and written English is essential; knowledge of another official Agency language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian) is an advantage. Testing may be part of the recruitment process.

How To Become a General Service Staff Member

Temporary Assistance Assignments

In order to provide qualified candidates to Divisions in need of temporary assistance (i.e. sick leave replacement, heavy work load), the Recruitment Unit keeps a roster of suitable administrative support staff and secretaries for this purpose. Working for a short time at the IAEA is a great opportunity for learning and getting a feel for the Agency's work environment, as well as for enhancing chances for fixed-term appointments.

Fixed-term Posts

All General Service fixed-term posts are advertised through vacancy notices on the IAEA's Website and filled on a competitive basis. The initial period of appointment is one year, of which the first six months are subject to a period of probation.

How To Apply

The IAEA advises you to make sure that your profile matches the requirements of the job you are applying for, as set out in the vacancy notice, before submitting your application for a General Service Post or General Application for General Services.

Also please check if the location of the vacant post corresponds to your place of residence. For example, if you submit your application for a post at Headquarters in Vienna, you must reside in Austria.

All applicants must submit an online IAEA Personal History Form. Once your Personal History Form is completed, please click on the vacancy notice you would like to apply for. A history of your applications is kept under your account; you can see the status of a vacancy at each moment.
