This webinar provides a review of the requirements related to optimization in diagnostic and interventional radiology as given by the IAEA GSR Part 3 (BSS) and their elaboration as provided by the Specific Safety Guide SSG-46. The meaning and role of quality assurance in radiology will also be discussed.

A brief introduction to patient dosimetry will be followed by a review of the use and limitations of diagnostic reference levels and of other methods for assessing optimization. Special attention will be given to specific issues in image guided interventional procedures.

An example of a regulatory framework related to optimization in diagnostic and interventional radiology will be presented, with emphasis on the challenges of its implementation and the importance of cooperation and communication of the regulatory authority with the relevant stakeholders in the medical community.
