Technical Cooperation Side Events at the 67th IAEA General Conference

The IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation will host or co-host five side events during the 67th IAEA General Conference (GC), to be held from 25 to 29 September.  The events will present the work of the IAEA technical cooperation programme in developing climate-smart agriculture, supporting nuclear education in the African region and expanding access to radiotherapy and cancer care, among other subjects. In addition,  the annual meetings of the four regional cooperative agreements—AFRAARCALARASIA and RCA—will be held both in advance of and during the week of the General Conference. A meeting of National Liaison Officers from the Europe region will take place on 28 September.

Improving Quality and Patient Safety in Diagnostic Radiology in Central Asia

This event will showcase success stories in improving quality and patient safety in diagnostic radiology in Central Asia. The results of several national and regional technical cooperation projects will be presented.

The event will be held on Monday, 25 September 2023, from 1.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. in Conference Room CR7, C Building, seventh floor.

Presentation by the Regional Network of Research Reactors and Related Institutions

The Regional Network of Research Reactors and Related Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean was established in March 2023 to optimize the utilization of Latin American research reactors and better satisfy existing and future demand for their products and services. The event will present the Network through the voices of regional coordinators and technical officers, including presentations on the Network's work plan and future activities that will take place under the Network’s framework. National authorities from nuclear institutions will present the current status of their facilities and future projects related to research reactors and their utilization.

This event will be held on Monday, 25 September 2023, from 4.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. in Conference Room M4, M Building, ground floor.

Remediation of the Semipalatinsk Test Site: 30 Years of IAEA Assistance

This event will showcase the results of IAEA assistance provided to Kazakhstan to remediate the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. It will outline prospects for the future economic use of the site.

The event will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 12.30 to 2.00 p.m. in Conference Room CR2, C Building, second floor.

Winners of the African Students' Competition on the Benefits of Nuclear Science

This event will present the winners of the African Students’ Competition on the Benefits of Nuclear Sciences, which was launched on 20 March 2023. The competition aimed to strengthen young students’ knowledge of the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology (NST), and to motivate young people to consider careers in the nuclear sector. Student videos on the role of NST in addressing challenges in cancer, climate change and agriculture will be presented.

This event will be held on Wednesday, 27 September 2023, from 11.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in Conference Room CR7, C Building, seventh floor.

Applying Advanced and Climate-Smart Technologies for a Food-Secure Africa

This event will showcase the successful applications of advanced and climate-smart technologies, as well as the results being achieved at the national level towards food security in Africa. It will cover agricultural soil and water management, improved crop production, enhanced livestock production, the control of insect pests and improvements in food safety.

This event will be held on Friday, 29 September 2023, from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon in Conference Room CR3, C Building, seventh floor.

Espace events

Supporting the Development of the Africa Continental Power System Masterplan

The IAEA and the International Renewable Energy Agency have been supporting, as modelling partners, the development of the Africa Continental Power System Masterplan since March 2021. This event will present the activities conducted and the main outcomes of this unique energy planning process, as well as the collaborative work of several major international organizations.

This event will be held on Wednesday, 27 September 2023, from 4.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at ESPACE M01, M Building, first floor.

Side events for IAEA flagship initiatives

The Department of Technical Cooperation will also be contributing to side events on three flagship IAEA initiatives.

ZODIAC—Current Status and Path Forward will be held on Monday, 25 September 2023, from 3.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. in ESPACE M01, M Building, first floor.

NUTEC Plastics: Progress and Prospects will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at ESPACE M01, M Building, ground floor.

Status Update on Rays of Hope: Cancer Care for All will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 11.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. in Conference Room CR7, C Building, seventh floor.

EXHIBITION

Alongside other IAEA departments and specialized programmes, the Department of Technical Cooperation will host an exhibition throughout the weeklong conference. The exhibit will showcase how the technical cooperation programme functions and the impact it helps to achieve.

Conference attendees are invited to visit the booth in the M building of the Vienna International Centre to pick up copies of the latest materials and publications. Throughout the week of the General Conference, the achievements realized through each TC regional programme will be showcased, with a different region highlighted each day of the event. Using the hashtag #IAEATC and #IAEAGC, visitors are encouraged to publish photos of their visit to the exhibition on Twitter.
