Today is World Science Day for Peace and Development. Established by UNESCO in 2001, this day is set out to demonstrate why and how science is relevant to our daily lives. This year’s theme on ‘Science for a Sustainable Future’ highlights the essential role of science and scientific research in meeting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Here’s a look at a few different areas where nuclear science and technology and the IAEA can contribute to sustainable solutions for development problems many people face every day across the globe.

The clothes industry is a major source of income for many countries. But before textiles can be turned into garments, they need to be dyed. Wastewater from dyeing processes is leading to environmental pollution. The IAEA supports the use of a radiation technology to address this issue.

Mosquitoes are one of the world's most dangerous pests. These carriers of diseases such as dengue and malaria wreak havoc over large parts of the world, causing sickness and death. In the future they could be tackled through the use of a nuclear technique.

Preventing Procreation: The IAEA's Research for Mosquito Control

The sterile insect technique, SIT for short, has been used for over 50 years to tackle pests such as fruit and tsetse flies, moths and screwworms.  At the IAEA's Insect Pest Control Laboratory, which is operated under a partnership with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, entomologists are adapting this technique to tackle disease-carrying mosquitoes.
