ReNuAL2: Modernization of the IAEA Seibersdorf Laboratories

The ReNuAL2 project will complete the modernization of the Agency’s laboratories at Seibersdorf, where the IAEA has trained thousands of fellows from developing countries. These laboratories are critical in assisting Member States tackle growing climate and environmental challenges. The event will offer an opportunity to thank Member States for their strong support for ReNuAL2 by providing them with national plaques on the donor display.

Revealing Secrets Using Nuclear Techniques

This event will present an overview of how nuclear techniques can be used to reveal secrets and verify authenticity in different areas such as cultural heritage, food and medicine.

Diagnostic Radiology Medical Physicists: Who Are We?

Clinically qualified medical physicists play a crucial role in sustaining safe, high quality and effective use of radiation in diagnostic radiology applications, and radiation medicine. However, medical physicists are often not consistently integrated in diagnostic radiology services, and their role in establishing, implementing and enhancing the quality management systems and control practices required by the International Basic Safety Standards is often overlooked. This event will present IAEA resources and activities in support of diagnostic radiology medical physics, highlighting the available IAEA guidelines and tools that are available to Member States.

Managing Exposure Due to Radionuclides in Food Other than During a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency

Since 2014, the IAEA safety standards have referred to the need for national authorities to evaluate exposures from radionuclides in food during non-emergency situations. This event will present the results and outcomes of a project started in 2017, in collaboration with the FAO and the WHO, including data on the radionuclides routinely present in food, with a focus on those radionuclides that contribute most to radiation doses; and will present different approaches to assessing and managing exposures from food during non-emergency situations.

Zoonotic Disease Integrated Action (ZODIAC): Current Status and Future Direction

To strengthen the preparedness and capabilities of Member States to respond to the threat of zoonotic diseases, such as COVID-19, the IAEA launched the ZODIAC initiative in 2020 to support Member States in the early detection, prevention and control of outbreaks.

Two years after the launch of ZODIAC, this event will highlight the developments under the flagship initiative and the progress made to integrate ZODIAC as part of concerted global efforts to tackle zoonotic diseases, and will take a look at the way forward.

State Declarations Portal: The Efficient Way to Exchange Information with the IAEA Department of Safeguards

The State Declarations Portal (SDP) provides an online method for State and regional authorities to submit to and receive information from the IAEA Department of Safeguards. This event will demonstrate how to securely exchange information through the SDP.

IAEA Review of Safety Aspects of Handling ALPS-Treated Water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

This event will showcase the work done and planned future activities under the IAEA’s safety review of the handling of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS)-treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. It will include presentations from various IAEA Departments involved in the assessment and analysis activities under this safety review.

The Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System

The Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System (SRIS) is a comprehensive platform that facilitates the sharing of information on national spent fuel and radioactive waste management programmes, spent fuel and radioactive waste inventories and facilities, as well as relevant laws and regulations, policies, plans and activities. Member States can benefit from SRIS, developed in cooperation with the European Commission and Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, for reporting, for example, on Joint Convention reports and Status and Trends in Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management reports.

Recruitment at the IAEA: Attracting Diverse Talent from Member States

During this event, IAEA Recruitment Officers will provide a high-level overview of the IAEA’s recruitment process and existing talent outreach tools, such as recruitment missions and pipelines, aimed at finding qualified and diverse professional from across Member States.

Additionally, the IAEA will share with Member States information about the different contract modalities that the IAEA offers, with particular focus on cooperation with Member States on the cost-free expert and Junior Professional Officer programmes.

Development of E-learning on the Nuclear Fuel Cycle: From Uranium Exploration to Spent Fuel Management

The IAEA is developing several e-learning materials on the nuclear fuel cycle to support capacity building in Member States. This event will present a map of the e-learning materials already developed and in progress covering the whole fuel cycle: from uranium exploration to spent fuel management, nuclear fuel engineering and operation.

The IAEA’s External Events Notification System

This event will showcase the IAEA’s External Events Notification System, a web-based tool that provides information on external events (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, river and coastal flooding, rotational winds and wildfires) that have occurred or are expected to occur, including on their severity and location, as well as estimations of their potential effects on nuclear installations and major population centres.

IAEA SMR Platform: Progress and Outlook

This side event will present the progress of the IAEA Platform on SMRs and their Applications, including its medium term strategy, the SMR Portal, publication Small Modular Reactors: A New Nuclear Energy Paradigm, and the interregional project on SMRs and microreactors.

Member States will showcase how they benefit from the Platform, which provides a single access point for IAEA support on SMRs, from development and deployment (including non-electric applications) to safety, security and safeguards. The event will also present the 2022 edition of the Supplementary Booklet to the IAEA Advanced Reactors Information System reporting the advances in SMR technology developments.

20th Anniversary of ARASIA

This event will mark the 20th anniversary of the Co-operative Agreement for Arab States in Asia for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology (ARASIA). The celebration will include an award ceremony in appreciation of the scientists who have contributed to ARASIA’s achievements over the past two decades, and the distribution of a special publication to mark the occasion.

Exploring Electricity Sector Decarbonization with PowerInvest

In this interactive session, participants will be challenged to set a country’s electricity generation mix, optimizing it for emissions reduction, and for costs and supply reliability, using the PowerInvest tool. Balancing these objectives with the need for sustainable use of land, water and critical mineral resources will also be explored.

Comprehensive Safeguards Capacity Building for States: ISSAS and COMPASS

The IAEA offers comprehensive capacity building support to help States meet their international nuclear safeguards obligations. This event will highlight such assistance, namely the IAEA State System of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Material Advisory Service (ISSAS) and the IAEA Comprehensive Capacity-Building Initiative for SSACs and SRAs (COMPASS). Participants will learn about the achievements, contributions, support, and future plans in helping States implement effective and efficient safeguards.

18 Years of the Programme on Nuclear Security at Major Public Events

This event will commemorate 18 years of the IAEA’s programme on nuclear security at major public events (MPEs). The speakers will look back on the establishment of the MPE programme and the many MPEs supported by the IAEA. Case studies, as well as planned developments in the MPE programme, will also be presented.

IAEA Resources for Technical and Statistical Information on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Activities Worldwide

This event will present the various resources available under the Integrated Nuclear Fuel Cycle Information System, including the World Distribution of Uranium Deposits Database, the World Thorium Deposits and Resources, the Post Irradiation Examination Facilities Database and the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities Database, as well as the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Simulation System, a scenario-based computer simulation system that uses simplified approaches to calculate fuel cycle materials, service requirements and actinide arisings.

Human Resource Strategies for Gender Equality in Nuclear Organizations

This event will present successful HR strategies and opportunities for nuclear leaders to create inclusive talent development. A panel of international experts will present best international HR practices. IAEA staff will showcase the IAEA’s experience and progress in outreach and gender parity. In line with the IAEA’s commitment to gender equality, as well as United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, the IAEA gathers and disseminates good practices to enable gender equality across the nuclear industry..

Leading for Safety: An Interactive Introduction to the International School on Nuclear and Radiological Leadership for Safety

During this event, the participants will have an opportunity to experience the innovative methodologies applied at the IAEA School on Nuclear and Radiological Leadership for Safety. The School’s curriculum is based on the IAEA safety standards and includes case studies, group discussions, presentations and gamification elements to ensure knowledge retention. This will be an interactive session with participants taking part in activities employed during the School.

Water Security in a Changing World

Water is essential for life but climate change, pollution, security threats, urbanization, as well as food and energy demand impact the sustainability and security of supply worldwide. This event will showcase the ways in which nuclear techniques can help Member States evaluate the sustainability of their water resources, the interlinkages between different water reservoirs, the need to maintain biodiversity while meeting human demand, and the long term impact of climate change on transboundary water resource security.

The New Safeguards Passive Seal

The Field Verifiable Passive Seal will replace the IAEA’s existing metal CAPS seal, which has been used to seal nuclear material and equipment for over 50 years. This new seal requires no tools to be closed, can be verified in place, and significantly streamlines the reporting process for inspectors — increasing their efficiency and effectiveness. This event will describe the features of the new passive seal, review the in-field verification steps, and walk the participants through the process for verification at IAEA Headquarters.

The Ninth Plenary Meeting of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN)

This event will provide a forum for IAEA Member States to discuss challenges related to the development of a sustainable radiation and nuclear safety infrastructure in line with the IAEA safety standards and international good practices. The Secretariat will brief the participants on the status of GNSSN development; cooperation with other forums/networks; new technologies; and promotion of IAEA peer review services and legal instruments in IAEA Member States.

Nuclear Energy: Supporting the Energy Transition in Africa

This event will showcase the 2022 Edition of Climate Change and Nuclear Power, which focuses on Africa.

Africa is expected to experience significant population growth, while enduring the impacts of climate change. Speakers from the region will outline perspectives and challenges on how nuclear energy can support the energy transition in their respective countries.

The finalists of the international student video contest on the “Role of Nuclear Technology in Addressing Climate Change”, will also be announced.

Overview of E-learning Courses on the IAEA Safety Standards

The event will showcase the newly launched e-learning courses on the IAEA safety standards in order to provide interested stakeholders with a better understanding of the basis of the safety standards, how they are developed, and how they are used and applied in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion and an open hands-on session on accessing and taking part in the courses.

Event to Mark the 25th Anniversary of the 1997 Nuclear Liability Instruments 

This event will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage and the 1997 Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, which were negotiated under IAEA auspices and for which the IAEA Director General is the depositary. The event is intended to raise awareness and to emphasize the importance of adherence to the Conventions.

Nuclear Technology for Controlling Plastic Pollution (NUTEC Plastics)

The IAEA’s NUTEC Plastics initiative aims to develop and mainstream nuclear technology solutions to plastic pollution in a two-pronged approach: understanding the abundance and impact of marine microplastics, and reducing plastic waste volumes through innovative recycling and the creation of biodegradable plastics. The IAEA is working with Member States to establish a network of marine plastic monitoring laboratories and plastic waste recycling pilot plants. The event will showcase the growing monitoring network and its database, which will provide a science base for policy decisions. Member States’ plans for radiation assisted recycling pilot plants will also be highlighted.

Keeping the Research Reactor Fleet in Good Shape: Ageing Management, Refurbishments and Upgrades

About half of the world’s operational research reactors are over 50 years old, while continuing to deliver their valuable services for science, industry, and health care. The event will present established practices, trends, and IAEA support to Member States in research reactor ageing management, refurbishments, and upgrades.

Applications of the IAEA’s Marine Radioactivity Information System

Sharing verified data with scientists, the IAEA’s Marine Radioactivity Information System (MARIS) supports a wide range of monitoring activities, pollution studies and tracer research applications. With recent upgrades to its user interface and public access now available, MARIS is on its way to being the global hub for marine radioactivity data. This event will showcase its applications for both experts and non-experts, as well as ongoing efforts to make MARIS data easier to find, understand and use, and to include data from other scientific domains for maximum impact and for collaboration with scientists in other organizations.

Seibersdorf: The First Nuclear Research Laboratory in Europe and its Contribution to Science Diplomacy

At this event, a panel will address, from a historical perspective, how the first nuclear research laboratory in Europe was conceived and developed, as well as its contribution to international cooperation on nuclear science and science diplomacy.

TC Project Management System: Plans for PCMF Upgrade

The technical cooperation (TC) Programme Cycle Management Framework (PCMF) has come of age and needs an upgrade. This event will provide an opportunity to present the PCMF upgrade project to Member States and highlight the need for extrabudgetary resources.

IAEA Coordinated Research and Operational Activities to Support Spent Fuel Storage

This event will present the results of the IAEA coordinated research projects (CRPs) on spent fuel performance and research and on ageing management programmes, which acted as vehicles for international research and development collaboration on the behaviour of spent nuclear fuel and systems during storage. It will also introduce the new CRPs entitled “SFERA — Spent Fuel Research and Assessment” and “Performance Assessment of Storage Systems for Extended Durations (PASSED)”.

IAEA Cooperation with Other International Organizations: Assistance to Embarking and Expanding Countries

This event will show how cooperation between the IAEA, the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) can benefit embarking and expanding Member States and their operating organizations in the pre-operational phase. The complementary roles of the IAEA’s Pre-Operational Safety Review Team reviews and WANO’s Pre-Startup Peer Reviews will be illustrated by the case studies of two Member States, which will present their experience in hosting the two different reviews. The engineering support provided by the IAEA and EPRI to operating organizations will be highlighted. This event is co-organized by the IAEA, WANO and EPRI.

Introducing Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources Technical Centre (DSRS-TeC) Peer Review Mission

The Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) Technical Centres concept, previously known as Qualified Technical Centre (QTC), aims to increase the worldwide capability and accessible resources to sustainably manage DSRS, by encouraging countries with well-equipped facilities and trained personnel to provide technical services for the management of DSRS within their country and abroad. Any public or private organization that would like to be reviewed as a DSRS Technical Centres, could request for the peer review mission to the IAEA through official channels. This side event will present the new IAEA peer review mission, DSRS Technical Centre (DSRS TeC), its approach and objectives, as well as experiences from the pilot mission.

Global demand for managing DSRS remains high. In some Member States, sealed radioactive sources are the only radioactive material and its management is performed periodically. The IAEA is aware that even if capacity building is provided to the Member State during periodical DSRS management operation, this knowledge may not be retained over time. Hence, the DSRS Technical Centres could be reach out to provide sustainable support and possibly provide solutions in a more cost-effective manner.

The IAEA DSRS TeC mission will review technical proficiencies, operational processes, and quality management system of these Technical Centres, upon request. Major activities of DSRS management which would be performed (entirely or partially) by a Technical Centre include:

•             Assistance in establishing SRS/DSRS inventory

•             DSRS characterization

•             Conditioning of Cat 1-2 DSRS

•             Conditioning of Cat 3-5 DSRS

•             Guidance and advice on end-of-life solutions (decay in storage, reuse, recycling, disposal)

•             Support for preparation for international transport or removal

Enhancing Capacities of Member States in Africa to Achieve Food Security Through the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Techniques

This event will showcase progress and results achieved in the agricultural sector in Africa by using nuclear techniques to improve crop resource use efficiency and cropping–livestock systems, and to protect soil and water resources for sustainable and climate-smart agriculture. The event will highlight the role of nuclear techniques in ensuring the safety and quality of food and agricultural commodities, and in facilitating export and trade.

Improving National Frameworks for Radiation Protection in Medical Exposure in Europe and Central Asia

This event will present the status, challenges and common problems in the implementation of the requirements of the International Basic Safety Standards, GSR Part 3, based on analyses of national legislation for medical exposure and self-assessment of Member States in Europe and Central Asia. Solutions and good practices for improving the regulatory and implementation framework will be presented, including new advisory missions on radiation protection and safety in medical exposure situations, regional workshops on topics such as justification, establishment and use of diagnostic reference levels and training of health professionals in radiation protection.

An Innovative Cross-disciplinary Approach to Improving and Evaluating the Nutritional Benefits of Underutilized Crops

Malnutrition is a global problem, driven by multiple factors. One such factor, climate change, undermines crop yield, food production, nutrient density and bioavailability. In this light, underutilized crops with high concentrations of nutrients, including protein, vitamins and minerals, and with the potential to survive under harsh climatic and environmental conditions, could be used to enhance food and nutrition security. This event will present the IAEA’s innovative approach to generating new information for policy makers on the nutritional and health benefits of underutilized crops improved through mutation breeding.

Nuclear Hydrogen for Clean Energy Transitions: IAEA and OECD/NEA Perspectives

At this event, the IAEA and the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD/NEA) will share the outcomes of their latest work on nuclear hydrogen as an enabler of clean energy transitions. The event will cover energy modelling activities; analyses of the competitiveness of, and business cases for, nuclear production of hydrogen; and current and future technologies for the large-scale production of low-carbon hydrogen using nuclear energy.

XCVD Presentation and Technical Demonstration 

The Next Generation Cerenkov Viewing Device (XCVD) is an instrument for gross defect verification of spent fuel, which capitalizes on the recent progress in optics and embedded systems, and saves verification results for accountability and traceability. At this technical demonstration, participants will see how the XCVD combines performance and form to excel over past generations. The latest on the Robotized Cerenkov Viewing Device (RCVD), which will greatly increase the efficiency of larger spent fuel verification campaigns, will also be presented.

How Nuclear Forensics Supports Criminal Investigations

This event will showcase how nuclear forensics can support criminal investigations through the examination of traditional forensics evidence contaminated with radionuclides at radiological crime scenes. It will be based on hypothetical scenarios and live demonstrations of in-field analysis of collected evidence. The interactive demonstration will enable attendees to experience nuclear forensic examination and how to use a glovebox.

The Plenary of the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) will focus on the common challenges and issues for regulatory infrastructure development among countries embarking on a nuclear power programme, and will facilitate experience sharing with countries with advanced nuclear power programmes. The IAEA and other supporting members will provide updates on their assistance programmes. The Plenary will also aim at promoting awareness of RCF activities for non-RCF members.
