About the webinar series

Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) are an important and practical tool for the optimization of radiation protection of patients in diagnostic and interventional radiology and in diagnostic nuclear medicine. DRLs establishment and use are also key requirements of GSR Part 3 (International BSS).

The scheduled webinars will present the status of implementation of the requirements of GSR Part 3 related to establishing and using DRLs in Europe. The webinars  are organized under the IAEA regional Technical Cooperation (TC) project for Europe RER 9147 “Enhancing Member States' Capabilities for Ensuring Radiation Protection of Individuals Undergoing Medical Exposure.”

Webinar 1: Status of implementation of diagnostic reference levels in TC Europe region: gaps, solutions, and good practices

Moderators: Alexey Katukhov (IAEA), Jenia Vassileva (IAEA)

Presenters: Atte Lajunen (Finland), Sue Edyvean (UK), Dario Faj (Croatia)

The webinar will present the status of implementation of the requirements of GSR Part 3 related to establishing and using DRLs in Europe, based on a survey organized under the IAEA regional TC project for Europe RER 9147 “Enhancing Member States' Capabilities for Ensuring Radiation Protection of Individuals Undergoing Medical Exposure”. Gaps, solutions, and good practices identified during a TC meeting on this topic (when?)  with representatives of TC Europe Member States will also be  presented.

Webinar 2: Good practice in setting and using DRLs in Europe

Moderators: Jenia Vassileva (IAEA), Dario Faj (Croatia)

Presenters: Guy Frija (EuroSafe Imaging), Sue Edyvean (UK), Atte Lajunen (Finland)

The webinar will present experiences in Europe and available guidelines and resources to support the establishment of DRLs and their utilization for the optimization of protection of patients and the improvement of clinical practice.

Learning objectives

  • To learn about the international standards and recommendations for DRLs
  • To understand the status of implementation of DRLs in TC region Europe
  • To recognise the common problems and suggested solutions
  • To learn about the good practices in Europe and available guidelines
  • To recognise the available resources to support  Member States

About the presenters

Guy Frija is Professor Emeritus at Université Paris Descartes (FR), Professor at Mac Master University (CA), radiologist consultant at the Paris Georges Pompidou European Hospital (FR), and Chair of EuroSafe Imaging. He was a pioneer in the a multi-stakeholder and holistic approach of radiation protection, an initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). During his various positions in the ESR, he also stimulated the setting up of a radiation protection committee.

Sue Edyvean currently leads the Medical (radiation) Dosimetry Group at Public Health England (PHE), based in Chilton, Oxfordshire, UK. She is a medical physicist by profession, and previously headed up the specialist group ImPACT (performance evaluation of CT scanners) in London. She has  member of  various international committees (IEC, ICRU and AAPM), and has authored, co-authored or contributed to various publications, papers, IAEA or ICRU CT reports, as well as numerous CT technology reports. She has presented and taught extensively at many conferences and courses, both nationally and internationally.

Atte Lajunen has worked for 11 years as an inspector at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) in Finland. His main responsibilities are with radiation protection in X ray imaging in healthcare and veterinary medicine. He has a degree of Master of Science in Technology from Aalto University with the major of Biomedical Engineering (Medical Physics).

Dario Faj is Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Osijek, Croatia, strongly connected to the University hospital of Osijek. He started his career in 1996 as radiotherapy medical physicist in the Medical physics department of the University hospital of Osijek, and later moved to diagnostic and interventional radiology. He is a member of the European Board for Accreditation in Medical Physics (EBAMP) and of the Article 31 Group of Experts. He has published a number of papers mostly dealing with the radiation safety of patients.
