Dual Energy X Ray Absorptiometry - DXA

E-learning Course

This module is about the measurement of bone density and body composition using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technique. DXA differs from many body composition techniques commonly used in nutrition studies in that DXA can measure subregions of the body. The module is based on information in IAEA Human Health Series No. 15Dual Energy X ray Absorptiometry for Bone Mineral Density and Body Composition Assessment.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Classify a patient as either normal, osteopenic, or osteoporotic
  • Position patients for spine, hip, forearm, and whole body DXA scanning
  • Recognize many common quality issues with DXA scans
  • Perform quality control phantom scans, and implement a quality assurance programme for a DXA center
