Description

Widely known as the world's "Atoms for Peace and Development" organization within the United Nations family, the IAEA was established in 1957 and is the international centre for cooperation in the nuclear field. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies. A key part of its work is verifying that nuclear material is not being diverted from peaceful purposes and supporting countries in the use of nuclear science and technology to improve living standards and boost economic growth.

This webinar will provide participants with an introduction to the IAEA, its history, main activities, main programmes of work, as well as its role in the development of nuclear law, including, the conclusion of international instruments and agreements such as those in the safeguards field, Project and Supply Agreements and Codes of Conduct, as well as the servicing of the implementation of international instruments such as providing the Secretariat to meetings of Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the special relationship between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations;
  • Identify the main functions of the policy making organs of the Agency, the General Conference of all Member States and the 35-member Board of Governors;
