At its first meeting today, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for 2000–2001 elected the Governor from Nigeria, Mr. I.H. Umar, as its Chairman. Mr. Umar is the Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.

Governors from Austria and Poland were elected as Vice-Chairmen. They are Ambassador Irene Freudenschuss-Reichl, the Governor and Resident Representative of Austria to the IAEA and International Organizations in Vienna, and Mr. Jerzy Niewodñiczanski, President of the Polish National Atomic Energy Agency:

Member States represented on the IAEA Board for 2000-2001 are Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Republic of Korea, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Syrian Arab Republic, Thailand, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and United States of America.
