Technical Meeting on Justification of Medical Exposure and the Use of Appropriateness Criteria

A technical meeting on justification of medical exposure in diagnostic imaging was held at the IAEA headquarters on 7-9 March 2016. More than 50 radiologists, medical physicists and radiation regulators from 28 different countries and 2 international organizations and professional bodies have participated in this meeting.

The focus of this meeting was to understand the factors that contribute to an unnecessary radiation burden and how this can be countered by implementing clinical imaging guidelines for choosing the best test for a given clinical scenario. Different perspectives and experiences from various countries have been shared throughout this meeting. Enhanced awareness towards unnecessary radiation exposure and more systematic ways to help making clinical decisions were recognized as important agendas in solving the justification issue. The meeting participants also discussed the future actions to be taken.

Participants agreed that there is a need for a holistic approach, which includes partnership of governments, civil society, international organizations, researchers, educators, institutions and professional associations to identify, advocate and implement solutions.
