Sudan Host Regional Coordination Meeting

The Sudan Atomic Energy Commission and Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research hosted an IAEA Regional Coordinators meeting under the framework of the TC project RAF9059, Strengthening Member States Technical Capabilities in Medical Radiation Protection to comply Basic Safety Standards in Khartoum, 12-16 March 2017.

Thirty-nine member states participated in the week long activities providing information on the status of radiation protecting in their country and upcoming efforts to continue their activities to strengthen radiation protection in medical applications.

Participants received information from their peers on successful ways to strengthen radiation protection of patients and identified opportunities of Member States collaboration in the region. Member States shared their efforts on adopting and adapting clinical imaging guidelines to justify radiation exposure, their projects to develop diagnostic reference levels in computed tomography to optimize patient exposure and information on upcoming training to improve radiation protection and patient safety in nuclear medicine. Presentations from Member States included information on the importance of cooperation with different agencies within a country such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Radiation Regulatory Authority. Specific prioritized implementation plans were completed at the conclusion of the meeting to assist in Member States initiatives to strengthen radiation protection of patients.

The host organization The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Sudan Atomic Energy Commission provided excellent logistical support to all participants.
