RER/7/005: RTC on Radioecology and Radiation Protection of the Env

From 27-30 October 2009, the project RER/7/005 Providing Technical Support for Implementing Modern Approaches and Tools for the Assessment of Radiation Impact on Terrestrial and Freshwater Environments, held a Regional Training Course on Radioecology and Radiation Protection of the Environment, at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna.

This training course was the first training event devoted specifically to environmental protection in Europe as part of the training programme of RER/7/005 for the 2009-2011 IAEA Technical Cooperation cycle.

The purpose of the training course was to disseminate information on international developments in environmental protection and to train national experts in application of modern tools for the assessment of radiation impact on terrestrial and freshwater environments.

The training course consisted of lectures, presentations, discussions and demonstration of the software tools. The key topics of the course were as follows:
• Current international developments in the area of environmental protection;
• Protection goals, comparison with approaches for chemicals;
• Assessment methodology - transfer, dosimetry and effects;
• Brief introduction to available tools;
• Application to the relevant situations in the participating Member States.

Training Course participants were from: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, TFYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan
