Press Note - Meeting of NLOs and AFRA-NCs

Following consultations with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Division for Africa of the Department of Technical Cooperation, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will organize the Meeting of National Liaison Officers (NLOs) and AFRA National Coordinators (AFRA NCs) from 26 to 28 June 2013 in Arusha, Tanzania. This Meeting will take place the same week as the 24th AFRA Technical Working Group Meeting.

This event which is of the utmost importance is scheduled as part of on-going effort to further improve the management of the Technical Cooperation Programme(TCP)  in Africa, both national and regional and aims to increase further the efficiency of IAEA deliverables and effectiveness of IAEA supported activities at the national and regional levels.

The meeting aims at achieving a four-fold objective, namely:

  • To review on the progress achieved since the 2012 meeting;
  • To share experience and lessons learnt from the implementation and management of national programmes through two case-studies;
  • To report on the design and formulation of the next Technical Cooperation Cycle 2014-2015;
  • To brainstorm about strategic partnership to mobilize additional financial resources.

This meeting will bring together National Liaison Officers (NLOs) and AFRA National Coordinators (AFRA NCs) from 39 African Member States currently participating in the TC Programme namely Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi , Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles,  Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

During this meeting, National Liaison Officers and National Coordinators will discuss measures and actions to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the TC Programme. This meeting is expected to achieve the following outcomes namely: agreed practical measures to further improve the delivery of the TC Programme; increased awareness about the urgent need to address nationally the issues pertaining to radiation safety; adopted strategic actions to build partnership in the region with the aim to attract more funding for the TC Programme in Africa and useful lessons and good practices gained for smoother reporting and closer communication between the Secretariat and Member States in the region.

The outcomes and recommendations of this meeting will be included in a Plan of Action adopted by the Meeting. Therefore, Member States would be encouraged to demonstrate further commitment by taking follow-up actions and implementing the meeting’s recommendations as agreed.
