Nuclear Safety and Security Side Events at the 68th IAEA General Conference

The IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety and Security will host 7 side events and three tours, during the 68th IAEA General Conference, to be held in Vienna from 16 to 20 September 2024.

International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group Forum 

Monday, 16 September 2024, from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. in Conference Room CR5, C Building, seventh floor. 

The International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group Forum, held annually, provides an opportunity to discuss and share opinions regarding various factors that will impact the future of nuclear safety.

Learning to Protect Patients: IAEA E-learning Courses

Monday, 16 September 2024, from 12.00 noon to 1.00 p.m. at ESPACE M0E, M Building, ground floor.

This event will draw attention to the e-learning courses on radiation protection of patients. These courses have more than 32 000 registered users. The event will provide information about the range of e-learning course content that can help participants learn more about how to protect patients during medical uses of radiation.

IAEA Database on Discharges of Radionuclides to the Atmosphere and Aquatic Environment 

Tuesday, 17 September 2024, from 10.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. at ESPACE M01, M Building, first floor.

The IAEA Database on Discharges of Radionuclides to the Atmosphere and Aquatic Environment (DIRATA) is a worldwide centralized repository of data submitted voluntarily by IAEA Member States and data collected by other international and national organizations. Launched over 20 years ago, DIRATA was recently enhanced with additional data and user-friendly features.

At this event, the DIRATA team will demonstrate how to use the database to monitor and report annual discharges of radionuclides from nuclear power plants and reprocessing facilities.

Building Communities of Practice in Nuclear Security: Network Approaches for Detection Operations, Education, Training, Technical Support and Scientific Support

Tuesday, 17 September 2024, from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at ESPACE M0E, M Building, ground floor.

This event will highlight how nuclear security networks — including the International Network of Front Line Officers and Organizations for Nuclear Security Detection, the International Nuclear Security Education Network, and the International Network for Nuclear Security Training and Support Centres — focus on building capacity and support, cooperation and exchange among their members. The event will draw attention to the networks’ collaborations and members’ experiences.

Safety of Advanced Nuclear Power Plant Designs: Enabling the Future 

Wednesday, 18 September 2024, from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. in Conference Room M4, M Building, ground floor.

This event will showcase the significant work undertaken by the IAEA to support Member States in the safety demonstration of innovative nuclear power plant (NPP) designs. It will present the IAEA’s plans to update/develop design safety and safety assessment standards to make them suitable for new NPP technologies, and the work being undertaken to make this possible. The event will provide a forum to discuss with Member States how they can support   the Agency in achieving its objective of ensuring the applicability of the IAEA safety standards to advanced NPP technologies.

Regulatory Cooperation Forum Plenary Meeting — Updates on RCF Activities and the IAEA Generic Roadmap to Develop Infrastructure for Nuclear Safety of the First Nuclear Reactor 

Wednesday, 18 September 2024 from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. in Conference Room CR3, C Building, seventh floor.

The Plenary Meeting of the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) will focus on the activities undertaken in relation to the updated action-oriented RCF Strategic Plan. Efforts to further enhance support for regulatory infrastructure development and assistance for embarking countries considering various technological options, including small modular reactors, will be discussed. At this event, various experiences of regulatory infrastructure development in embarking countries will be shared and case study presentations, will be collated into a series of topical publications under the IAEA ‘Generic Roadmap to Develop Infrastructure for Nuclear Safety of the First Nuclear Reactor’ project.

Senior Safety and Security Regulators Meeting 

Thursday, 19 September 2024, from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. in Board Room D, C Building, fourth floor.

The heads of regulatory bodies and other senior regulatory officials in the fields of nuclear, radiation, transport and radioactive waste safety and nuclear security will discuss regulatory challenges and share good practices. The meeting will focus on the IAEA Secretariat’s initiatives to support regulatory bodies.

TOURS

Lunchtime Tour of the Incident and Emergency Centre

The Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is the global focal point for international preparedness for and response to nuclear or radiological emergencies. The tour will provide participants with an overview of the IEC’s response roles and emergency preparedness and response tools.

Tours will be offered on Tuesday, 17, Wednesday, 18 and Thursday, 19 September from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. The planned duration of each tour is one hour.

The assembly point is the Information Desk at the entrance to the M building from where participants will be picked up on the respective day at 12.50 p.m.

Tour of the Radiation Safety Technical Services Laboratory

This event involves a laboratory tour. The tour will showcase the Radiation Safety Technical Services Laboratory, which provides annual monitoring services for external and internal radiation exposure for 3000 occupationally exposed workers. These services are critical to IAEA activities globally. Support services also include training, consultation and the loan of survey equipment.

Tours will be offered on Tuesday, 17, Wednesday, 18 and Thursday 19 September 2024. from 2.30 p.m. to 3.45 p.m.

The assembly point is the Information Desk at the entrance to M building, from where participants will be picked up on the respective day at 2.20 p.m.

Visit to the Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre

This event will involve a visit to the Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre at the IAEA Seibersdorf laboratories on Thursday, 19 September 2024, from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Advance registration is required by sending an email, stating first and family name, affiliation, delegation, email and telephone number.

The assembly point is the Information Desk at the entrance to the M building from where participants will be picked up on the respective day at 1.45 p.m.
