Nuclear and Radiation Safety and Security in Focus at General Conference Side Events

Safety and security in all things nuclear and radiation are highlighted during the IAEA Department of Safety and Security’s side events and tours during the 61st IAEA General Conference (18-22 September 2017).

Tours of the Incident and Emergency Centre will be held Tuesday and Thursday at 13:00. Tours of the Radiation Protection and Monitoring Service Laboratories will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00.  To participate, stop by the Information Desk at the ground floor in the M Building to learn more and sign up well ahead of time.

20th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management

Monday, 18 September 2017, 12:00 – 13:30 in Conference Room C3, C building, 7th floor.
The Joint Convention is the first legal instrument to address the issue of spent fuel and radioactive waste management safety on a global scale. It does so by setting international benchmarks and creating a similar “peer review” process to the Convention on Nuclear Safety. This event will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Joint Convention, which took place on 5 September 1997. Read more...

The International Nuclear Safety Group Forum: Disposal of High Level waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel

Monday, 18 September 2017, 14:00-15:30 p.m. in Conference Room C3, C Building, 7th floor
The INSAG Forum focuses on matters related to the disposal of high level radioactive waste and spent fuel. Sessions will focus on regulator-operator interactions; key points for the implementation of safe geological disposal and lessons learned from a waste isolation pilot plant accident.
INSAG is a group of nuclear safety experts drawn from regulatory bodies, technical support organizations, research and academia and the nuclear industry. The group is convened under the auspices of the IAEA to provide advice and guidance on nuclear safety approaches, policies and principles. Read more...

Nuclear Security e-Learning: Enhancing States’ Capacity to Strengthen a Global Response to a Global Threat

Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network Plenary – Capacity Building and International School of Leadership for Safety

The Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network plenary meeting focuses on the importance of nuclear safety knowledge management and capacity building for establishing a robust nuclear safety infrastructure. 2017 ConvEx-3 Exercise: Enhancing Emergency Preparedness and Response during the IAEA’s Largest International Emergency Exercise

This event highlights the preparations, conduct and outcomes of the large-scale ConvEx-3 exercise held in June 2017. The 36+ hour ConvEx-3 involved over 80 Member States and 11 international organizations. Representatives from Hungary, which developed the emergency exercise scenario, will describe their national response activities while the IEC will present some of the immediate lessons learned regarding the international response arrangements. Senior Regulators’ Meeting
