The busiest week of an IAEA Nuclear Energy Management (NEM) School wrapped up last week in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. This was the 3rd joint UAE-IAEA regional NEM School held since 2012, mainly for young nuclear professionals from the Gulf region.

From 14 to 24 May, 42 participants from the UAE nuclear sector and academia as well as four from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Sudan received a unique international educational experience from the IAEA experts and UAE nuclear leaders.

Hosted by Khalifa University, the School helped participants to broaden their understanding of key issues and challenges associated with the peaceful use of nuclear technology such as safety, security, economics, public acceptance and non-proliferation. A strong focus was given at building future leadership competencies to manage nuclear energy programmes.

“The importance and recognition of nuclear power as a sustainable and low-carbon energy source that continues to grow worldwide,” said Mikhail Chudakov, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy, at the opening of the School.

“It is the Agency’s primary mission to help Member States that have decided to use nuclear energy to do it in a safe, responsible, and sustainable manner.”

In the course of two weeks, over 30 experts from the IAEA and international agencies presented the Agency’s work on all aspects of nuclear infrastructure development. These include legal, regulatory, industrial, technological and human resources issues that required special attention throughout the life cycle of nuclear programme.

The Joint UAE-IAEA NEM School has been designed by the IAEA in collaboration with key UAE organisations including the Khalifa University, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority, and the Nawah Energy Company.

Recognizing the need for a competent workforce to run a nuclear power plant, these nuclear implementation organisations have joined hands in pooling experienced lecturers to speak on diverse topics.

The essential practical element of the School’s curriculum included a technical visit to the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant site, where four reactors are under construction.
