The IAEA is celebrating its 60th anniversary, starting with this year's General Conference. It is an opportunity to look back at the remarkable achievements of the Agency in six decades of promoting the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies and also to reflect on 60 years of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR).

The IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) will be using this special occasion to mark advancements in the field of EPR:

  • International (and Regional) Efforts to Enhance Emergency Preparedness and Response

This side event is jointly organised with the European Commission to highlight the role that cooperation between the IAEA and EC has played in strengthening EPR for nuclear or radiological emergencies. Participants will learn through demonstrations about the development of the IAEA's International Radiation Monitoring Information System (IRMIS) and the EC's European Union Radiological Data Exchange Platform (EURDEP) and how the standardisation of information contained on both systems has become a foundation for enhanced information sharing to improve preparedness for and response to emergencies for the benefit of all Member States. Monday 26 September 2016, Conference Room C4, 4:00-6:00 p.m.

  • IAEA School of Radiation Emergency Management: Training on Nuclear or Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response

This event will provide an overview of the IAEA School of Radiation Emergency Management. Perspectives from past participants and lecturers from the School in Italy, Brazil and Japan as well as expectations for the upcoming School in Austria will note the vital contribution the school has made in building capacities of Member States in EPR. Tuesday 27 September 2016, Conference Room C5, 12.00 noon to 2.00 p.m.

  • Tours to the Incident and Emergency Centre

Delegates and visitors are invited to attend one of two tours to the IEC during the General Conference. To mark the 60th anniversary, the IEC has installed a new walkthrough timeline of the history of EPR in the IAEA since 1957. This exciting new addition to our tour will ensure visitors not only learn about our current role and activities, but also about how global EPR has developed over the past six decades.

Tuesday 27 September 2016, 3.00 to 4.00 p.m. and Thursday 29 September 2016, 3.00 to 4.00 p.m. Meeting point: Information Desk, M-Building, 2.30p. Sign up required in advance at Information Desk.
