The 2016 Scientific Forum on Nuclear Technology for the Sustainable Development Goals opened today. At the two-day event, experts and scientists will showcase how nuclear techniques are used to improve human and animal health, boost prosperity and protect the planet.

At the meeting on Global Challenges for Radiotherapy: Safe and Effective Use of New Technology, the introduction of new and complex radiotherapy technology was discussed, including the safety challenges that such technology poses as well as the various barriers to its effective use.

At the side event, How to Maximize the Efficiency of Radiation Treatment — Integrating Cobalt-60 Machines and Linear Accelerators, recent advances in both these technologies as well as guidance on the most important factors to be considered when deciding on the type of radiotherapy equipment to invest in for cancer treatment was discussed.

The Exchange of Regulatory Experiences between the Ibero-American Forum of Radiological and Nuclear Regulatory Agencies and Other Regional Regulatory Associations and Networks event presented the achievements in the strengthening cooperation among regulatory bodies.

At the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network Plenary Meeting, delegates discussed their experiences with implementing IAEA peer review missions in nuclear safety and security. They evaluated the role of the Agency’s peer review missions and proposed recommendations on strengthening nuclear security globally.

The panel discussion on the Deliverables and Effectiveness of the Technical Cooperation Programme in Africa highlighted the wide ranging IAEA’s technical cooperation programme achievements and best practices in Africa in the area of human health, water resource management, industrial applications and human resource development.

Ready for Remediation: Addressing Central Asia’s Enduring Uranium Legacy focused on the groundwork being done by international partners and the countries of Central Asia to prepare for clean-up of the uranium mining legacy in that region.

InTouch+: The New Event Communication Platform introduced the successor to the InTouch system, used by IAEA Permanent Missions and National Liaison Officers when preparing technical cooperation-related events.

The panel meeting on Joining Efforts in the Fight against Cervical Cancer — A United Nations Joint Global Programme on Cervical Cancer event, information on a five-year United Nations Programme to control and prevent cervical cancer for women was presented.

At the meeting on Assisting Low and Middle Income Countries to Optimize Investments in Radiation Medicinepanellists agreed that a radical increase in spending on cancer control is essential if the international community is to meet the United Nations sustainable development target of reducing cancer-related deaths by a third in 15 years.

Member States side events

Pursuit of Further Safety in the Decontamination and Decommissioning of Damaged Reactors and Clean-up of Contaminated Sites, organized by Japan, shared the experiences and insights gained by various stakeholders in addressing challenges in the decontamination and decommissioning of damaged reactors and in the clean-up of contaminated sites.

Management and Oversight of an International Nuclear Supply Chain, organized by France, featured two panel discussions on management and oversight of an international nuclear supply chain and nuclear supply chains and capacity building.

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, organized by the Non-Aligned Movement, highlighted the importance of mobilizing international efforts towards achieving the common goal of a nuclear weapon free world.

International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC) Informational Session, organized by Argentina, provided information about IFNEC and the upcoming meetings in Buenos Aires, including the Latin American Nuclear Stakeholders Conference.

Knowledge Management and Capacity Training in International Nuclear Power Plant Projects, organized by Japan, discussed the challenges, approaches, technology and experiences to ensure effective knowledge transfer and retention processes between exporters and host countries during complex nuclear power plant projects.

At the event, 10 000 Equivalent Years of Nuclear Power Plant Operation and More to Come: representatives from Canada, China, France, India, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and the USA presented their expertise in nuclear power plant operation since 1956 and discussed the future of nuclear power.

The French Innovation in Support of Nuclear Power Programmes provided information on how a nuclear power programme relies on the development of innovative technologies in a wide range of fields including mining, commissioning, operating, capacity building, waste and spent fuel treatment and storage, and decommissioning.

Heavy Water: Global Prospect, Growing Peaceful Demand (Iranian Case Study) focused on the current and future non-nuclear global application of heavy water as well as on Iran’s policy on the issue.
