Wilfred Peter Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize, and Dazhu Yang, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, signed Belize’s Country Programme Framework (CPF) for the period of 2019–2023 on 13 November 2019 and 6 November 2019 respectively. A CPF is the frame of reference for the medium-term planning of technical cooperation between a Member State and the IAEA and identifies priority areas where the transfer of nuclear technology and technical cooperation resources will be directed to support national development goals.

Belize has been an IAEA Member State since 2006. Its 2019–2023 CPF identifies five priority areas:

  1. Radiation safety;
  2. Food and agriculture;
  3. Human health and nutrition;
  4. Water and the environment;
  5. Energy
