UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

The IAEA held a private interview with a Senior Engineer connected with Iraq's procurement history related to 81mm aluminum tubes.

Five UNMOVIC missile teams inspected a total of six sites: Al Khadimia and Al Samoud Factories which are involved in liquid propellant-type missile engine; Al Assma Company that manufactures Al Fateh missile parts; Al Mutasim Airfield that is involved in conducting flight test of remotely piloted vehicle (RPV); Al Ameen Factory that is involved in hydrostatic testing of Al Fateh and Al Abour missile motor cases; and Um Al Maarik General Establishment which manufactures missile and rocket motor cases. The teams continued to verify Iraq's declarations and establish a comprehensive monitoring mechanism.

An UNMOVIC chemical team returned to Al Mutanna in connection with the mustard gas destruction process and took some chemical samples for analysis.

An UNMOVIC multidisciplinary team and one chemical team had a joint operation and inspected the Al Zahif Al Kabeer Centre, a chemical plant located approximately 30 km northwest of Baghdad. The plant was set up to extract minerals and chemical compounds from mining and seawater.

An UNMOVIC biological team flew by helicopter to Al Fuwayjah, approximately 50km southwest of Kirkuk, and inspected a seed processing facility.

A Mosul-based multidisciplinary team returned to the Hadr Ammunitions Storage Facitity outside Mosul and inspected a military site that consisted of 100 purpose-built storage bunkers and a number of temporary brick/metal and external stores. The inspection focused primarily on artillery and small-calibre munitions.

One IAEA team conducted a car-borne radiation survey in the Samarra area, approximately 100 km northwest of Baghdad. A second IAEA team performed an inspection at Al Nida, a heavy industrial manufacturing plant in Baghdad. A third team performed a no notice inspection of Um Al Maarik, 50km south of Baghdad and then went onto Tho Al Fekar, 15km north of Baghdad, to inspect flow forming equipment and processes.
