International Experts to Meet at IAEA to Discuss Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Reactors

2015/10

Experts from around the world will take part in an International Conference on Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors—An Integrated Approach to the Back-End of the Fuel Cycle, 15-19 June, at the Vienna headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The conference will bring together almost 250 participants from 41 countries including representatives of governments, regulatory bodies, industry, and spent fuel and waste management organizations. They will exchange information and experiences on the importance of an integrated long-term approach to managing spent fuel from nuclear reactors.

Spent fuel is steadily accumulating in short- and medium-term storage. That’s due to a variety of factors, including issues related to recycling and the availability of long-term disposal facilities. Participants will share the latest information on how government bodies, operators, spent fuel service providers and waste agencies are addressing these issues. Particular attention will be given to the safe management of spent fuel and the progress being made on developing the first high-level disposal facilities for power reactor fuels.

Open to accredited journalists throughout the week, the conference will touch on topics including:

  • Safety and security aspects of spent fuel management
  • Storage options in support of an integrated approach
  • Management strategies, including engaging stakeholders
  • Management of damaged fuel
  • How increasing efficiencies in one part of the nuclear fuel cycle can impact other parts of the fuel cycle

Press Opportunities

  • The conference sessions are open to the press.
  • IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will deliver remarks at the conference’s opening session in M Building, Board Room A, at 9:30-10:30 a.m. on 15 June. Other keynote speakers include Conference President Fiona Rayment, Director of Fuel Cycle Solutions at the U.K.’s National Nuclear Laboratory; and William D. Magwood, Director General of the Nuclear Energy Agency at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
  • A closing press conference may be held on 19 June. If so, details including the time and speakers will be made public at a later stage.
