IAEA Event at Astana Expo to Discuss Future of Nuclear Power

Senior officials and experts from the IAEA and Kazakhstan will discuss the future of nuclear power during an Expo 2017 Astana side event on 30 June.

The event, entitled "The Promise of Nuclear Power for a Better Energy Future", will feature high-level speakers exploring the outlook for nuclear power - its promises as well as its challenges - and how the IAEA and Kazakhstan cooperate in this area. The six speakers at the IAEA-organized event will each give a brief presentation, to be followed by a Q&A session with the international audience.

The side event will be moderated by Sayed Ashraf, Special Assistant to the IAEA Director General. Journalists are welcome to attend the side event.

Speakers (in speaking order):

  1. Victoria Alexeeva (Energy/Environmental Economist in the IAEA’s Planning and Economic Studies Section) on the drivers for nuclear power, role of nuclear power in energy security, climate change and SDGs.
     
  2. Matthew Cole Van Sickle (Nuclear Human Resource Development Specialist in the IAEA’s Nuclear Power Engineering Section) on IAEA assistance to newcomers, long-term operation of existing reactors, advanced nuclear energy systems, management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.
     
  3. Sayed Ashraf, Special Assistant to the IAEA Director General, on IAEA collaboration with and assistance to Kazakhstan.
     
  4. Shaiakhmet Shiganakov, Leading Scientist, National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Radioactive waste and spent fuel management in Kazakhstan.
     
  5. Batyrzhan Karakozov, (Director of Department of Atomic Energy and Industry, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy) on Nuclear Power Programme of Kazakhstan and the Priority Measures for its further development.
