Greening the Conference

Greening the Conference

To demonstrate its commitment to sustainability, the IAEA will organize its conferences and symposia as  green meetings according to the guidelines of the Austrian Ecolabel.

There will be a focus on the areas of paper smart documentation, waste reduction and recycling, and environmentally friendly catering.

We kindly ask our participants to consider the following:

If  possible, use environmentally compatible public means of transport to travel to the event location. In Vienna we suggest using public transportation or walking.

Please consider offsetting your CO2 emissions through compensation payments, when travelling by car or plane.

Consider choosing an eco-labelled hotel - find more information below. Please make use of the environmentallyfriendly offers of your hotel (change of towels and bedlinen only when needed for example). Turn off all lights, electronic equipment (TV, air condition system, heating, computer etc.) when you leave the hotel room for some time.

Dispose of your waste (PET, glass, paper, metal, batteries, etc.) via the separate collection systems provided at the hotel and at the event venue.

Please bring your own writing utensils.

Your conference badge can be returned at the exit at Gate 1 after the event.

Hotel Accomodation

Participants must make their own travel and hotel arrangements. Hotels which are offering a reduced rate for the conference are listed here.

Hotels with the following logo  are environmentally friendly and have been certified with the Austrian "Umweltzeichen". Participants are encouraged to stay in hotels that are environmentally friendly and that support the Agency's greening efforts.

Should participants wish to take advantage of the reduced rates, reservations should be made by e-mailing the hotel directly and not online via the hotel website or booking portals. Please note all rates are subject to availability and may not be available during peak times. The IAEA is not in a position to assist participants with hotel bookings, nor can the IAEA assume responsibility for paying cancellation fees or for re-bookings and no shows.

Public Transportation

By U-Bahn:
The VIC can be reached directly with the U-Bahn by taking line U1 (marked in red on maps of the transport network) towards Wien Leopoldau and alighting at Kaisermühlen-Vienna International Centre station (2 minutes walking distance to VIC Gate 1). Trains are running every 3-5 minutes during the day. Single tickets, multiple tickets for two, four or eight journeys or for one, three or eight days, and weekly tickets can be purchased from vending machines in all U-Bahn stations, at tobacco shops with the sign ‘Tabak Trafik’ or at the VIC newspaper stand located in the C building. Weekly tickets are valid from Monday to Sunday and can be used for unlimited travel on all modes of public transport (U-Bahn, bus, tram and local trains (S-Bahn)) within the city of Vienna.

Further information on public transport in Vienna (including timetables) can be obtained here.

Participants with disabilities can find information on accessibility of public transportation in Vienna here.

By train:
Vienna’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof) has excellent and frequent train connections from many European destinations. Change here for U-Bahn line U1, direction Leopoldau (please see above). Trains are running every 3 to 5 minutes and the journey between Hauptbahnhof and Kaisermühlen-Vienna International Centre will take approximately 15 minutes. Further information on travel by train (including timetables) can be found on the ÖBB website. Participants with disabilities can find information on the accessibility of ÖBB services here.

By taxi:
Should it not be possible using public transportation the VIC is also reachable by taxi. Since all meeting participants have to go through the registration formalities, those arriving by taxi should ask to be dropped off at Wagramer Strasse 5, Gate 1 of the VIC. For departures, a taxi may be requested at the United Nations Security and Safety Service (UNSSS), located at Gate 1. An additional fee is charged for taxis ordered by telephone. The customary tip for taxi drivers in Austria is 10% of the fare. Please note that there may be an extra charge for luggage, which is not shown on the meter.

From Vienna Airport

By bus:
The Vienna Airport Lines bus service operates at hourly intervals, from 05:10 to 20:10, every day. Buses depart from the VIC bus station, which is located on Wagramer Strasse, in front of Gate 1. The trip usually takes about 30 minutes and costs €8.
