Technical Meeting on the Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System

8 – 12 Jul 2024
Virtual event
Vienna, Austria
Event code: EVT2304223

The Net Enabled Waste Management Database (NEWMDB) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) contains information on national radioactive waste management programmes, radioactive waste inventories and radioactive waste disposal, as well as relevant laws and regulations, waste management policies, and plans and activities. The first NEWMDB data collection cycle was conducted in March 2002 (for data for the year 2000). Subsequent collections have been performed annually since 2004.Since 2010, the IAEA, the European Commission (EC), and the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have organized several joint meetings with the overall aim of promoting greater harmonization of data reported on national waste and spent fuel inventories, thereby reducing the overall reporting burden on the member states of these organisations. A harmonized approach is envisaged in order to produce benefits for all stakeholders, including the public, as the information reported will become more consistent, easier to report and more usable for other purposes (e.g. benchmarking of inventory data and management approaches and National Reports to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management). The agreed data model provided the basis for the development of a joint reporting tool by the IAEA with financial support from the EC — the Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System (SRIS). The NEWMDB, which evolved into the SRIS, was modified, and updated to accommodate the agreed parameter set. The user interface of the database was redesigned to simplify workflows and improve the overall user experience. The upcoming SRIS meeting will highlight the system's impact and its pivotal role as a dynamic and accurate global information source. The purpose of the event is to foster knowledge exchange among national coordinators of the Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System (SRIS), enabling them to share valuable experiences and lessons learned, as well as to obtain constructive feedback on the system. Additionally, the event aims to demonstrate the functionalities, utility, and benefits of the SRIS as a robust tool for the enhancement of transparency in national radioactive waste and spent fuel management programmes to Member States that have yet to adopt the system. The SRIS Virtual Technical Meeting is for Country Coordinators nominated for SRIS, representatives from countries expressing interest in nominating Country Coordinators, and individuals actively engaged in the Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System (SRIS).
