Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy Section

This Section deals with the medical use of radiation for the treatment of patients with cancer. Its objective is to improve the availability and safe use of radiotherapy in IAEA Member States.

Radiotherapy is one of the most widely used therapies for cancer treatment. The Section helps Member States establish and upgrade radiotherapy centres and equipment, and provides capacity-building and education of professionals working with radiotherapy technology. It also produces reference documents to help medical experts use current and future advanced radiotherapy technologies in an effective and efficient manner.

The Section’s clinical research  programme includes randomized trials for various types of cancer, health economics research tailored to the needs of Member States, as well as  an innovative research and training programme in the safe use of high doses of radiation for the sterilization of tissue allografts (a type of tissue graft), in clinical biological dosimetry, and in tissue engineering.
