67th IAEA General Conference

25 – 29 September 2023, Vienna International Centre, Vienna

Tuesday, 26 September

The IAEA Statute authorizes the Agency to establish or adopt standards of safety for protection of health and minimization of danger and to provide for the application of these standards. Since the first IAEA safety standard was published in 1958, they have served as the global reference for national regulatory systems and form the basis for several international legal instruments. This event, co-hosted by MT and NS, will be facilitated by DDG MT and will feature a panel discussion with DDG NS and other leading experts in the field to explore the evolution of the IAEA’s role in developing these standards, their practical use amongst Member States and evolution in their dissemination.

This event will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at ESPACE M0E, M Building, ground floor.

Belgium is one of the leaders in developing pioneering nuclear back-end solutions through next generation high-tech, low-cost decommissioning techniques, and via optimization of final geological repositories through transmutation of long-lived radiotoxic minor actinides, as planned by the MYRRHA project.

This event will demonstrate that full sustainability of the nuclear supply chain is no longer a dream. The CYCLADE and RECUMO projects, and the upcoming Belgian final waste disposal concepts, are examples of the Belgian ambition for sustainable back end solutions. This event is organized by Belgium.

This event will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 4.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. in Conference Room M7, M Building, ground floor.

A key challenge for Member States interested in the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) is the identification and assessment of suitable technology options to meet their national objectives. The IAEA Platform on Small Modular Reactors and their Applications is the focal point for the Agency’s activities on SMRs and their applications, and one of the tools offered to Member States is Nuclear Reactor Technology Assessment (RTA) methodology. This event will demonstrate how to perform SMR assessment using the RTA methodology, and the Advanced Reactors Information System (ARIS) database.

This event will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 4.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. in Conference Room CR7, C Building, seventh floor.

At this event, discussions will cover new reactor types, including Generation IV reactor pilot projects launched by several countries, which promise not only to be safer and cheaper, but also to produce less high-level waste. An expert panel will reflect on how lessons from our nuclear past can guide the future of nuclear waste management. Among the issues to be discussed are the challenges for waste management in the light of new reactor types, how these challenges can be addressed without repeating past mistakes, and which adjustments to existing safety regulations may be necessary. This event is organized by Germany

This event will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m. in Conference Room M7, M Building, ground floor.
