Postgraduate Educational Course in Radiation Protection and the Safety of Radiation Sources for Arabic-speaking countries

Purpose

The purpose of the event is to build competence in in radiation protection and the safety of radiation sources through both theoretical and practical training. The course will be held in Arabic.

Scope

The course will consist of lectures and practical training including practical exercises, demonstrations and technical visits in the field. The course is based on the IAEA Standard Syllabus (Training Course Series 18 (Rev 1), 2019) which covers the following topics:

  • Review of fundamentals, quantities and measurements, biological effects of ionizing radiation;
  • The international system of radiation protection and the regulatory framework;
  • Assessment of external and internal exposures (other than medical);
  • Planned exposure situations (general requirements; non-medical applications, medical applications), emergency exposure situations, existing exposure situations, and training the trainers.

Participants are expected to carry out a work project, which  provides the opportunity to apply the competence acquired within the course. The project should be aimed at solving a specific radiation protection problem in their home country and participants are expected to present their project at the end of the course.

Participants’ qualifications

Young professionals, preferably below 35 years of age are encouraged to apply. They need to have  a formal education to a level equivalent to a university degree either in physics or in a physics-related discipline (e.g., nuclear engineering), or in chemistry/biomedical sciences combined with at least three years of experience working in the field of radiation protection. A copy of the academic record needs to be attached with the submission.

The Agency organizes interregional and regional training courses and supports national training courses in the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. Applications for events carried out under the technical cooperation programme must be submitted through the usual channels
