Radiation Oncology

Introduction

The Applied Radiobiology and Radiotherapy section offers a wide spectrum of education and training activities. These include face-to-face training courses and workshops, as well as online learning, fellowship programme. Interregional and regional networks promote interaction and exchange of resources and strategies among member states.

Inter-regional networks

This course contains a collection of cases discussed in the Asia-Pacific Radiation Oncology Network (ASPRONET), a regional multidisciplinary Virtual Tumour Board organized under RAS6096. The Virtual Tumour Board and associated case repository enables training and continuing professional education for radiation oncologists and other radiotherapy professionals through case-based learning, as the management of anonymised individual patients with cancer is discussed. This includes aspects of diagnosis (including appropriate use of diagnostic imaging) and radiotherapy planning of curative and palliative treatments. Case discussions are supplemented by video presentations on the management of particular cancer types and oncology.

Region specific networks

The International Atomic Energy Agency established the AFrica Radiation Oncology NETwork (AFRONET) as a pilot project for African countries. Through videoconferencing, cancer professionals discussed and reviewed challenging cancer cases. Monthly virtual meetings took place among radiotherapy centres in Africa. During these meetings, individual case were presented and discussed, and a consensus recommendation for treatment was reached. The platform was also used for regularly scheduled webinars.

Virtual Tumour Boards (RCA/RCP)

Tumour Boards are meetings in which cases of cancer are reviewed and discussed by groups of physicians, typically representing several different medical specialties. This approach allows improved diagnosis and treatment planning due to the input from several different medical professionals with complementary experience and expertise.
