IAEA Conference on Safety for Nuclear Power Plants Coming up in Beijing

,

An IAEA International Conference on Enhancing the Operational Safety of Nuclear Power Plants is to be held in Beijing, China from 15-19 April 2024.

Hosted by the China Nuclear Energy Association, conference discussions will focus on how to ensure the safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants. This is the foundation for the long-term development of the nuclear power industry, as it paves the way to realize the goal of tripling nuclear power by 2050, in order to help reduce global energy emissions and mitigate climate change.

Nuclear power plant owners and operators must maintain the highest standards of safety while striving to improve plant performance through technical and organizational changes, improved life management, power upgrades and outage optimization.

This conference will address enhancements such as automatic monitoring systems in operational safety management at all stages of nuclear power plant operations from new build, operational and extended life operations.

“It is indispensable that operational safety at nuclear installations is maintained at a high level, to protect people and the environment. This conference will help enable all of us to do that,” said Anna Bradford, Director of the IAEA Division of Nuclear Installation Safety.

Attendees will be representatives of new and existing nuclear operators, regulators, technical support organizations, construction companies and other like-minded organizations.

Contributors interested in submitting papers for the conference still have the chance to submit their abstracts by 9 February 2024, in one of the themes and topics listed below:

  • Leadership and Safety Culture — Striving for Excellence
  • New Build — Challenges and Opportunities
  • Operational Performance Improvements — Getting Better at What We Do
  • Corporate Oversight — Influencing Behaviours
  • Long Term Operations — Extended Operations
  • Operating Experience — Completing the Learning Cycle

Guidelines and details for the submission of abstracts are available here. Those wishing to contribute should submit an abstract through the IAEA web-based submission system (IAEA-INDICO).

Authors will be informed by 15 February 2024 as to whether their submission has been accepted, either orally or as a poster, for presentation at the conference.

All persons wishing to participate in the event must be designated by an IAEA Member State or should be a member of an organization that has been invited to attend. No registration fee is charged to participants.

More information on registration and participation is available here

This conference is the fifth in the series of operational safety conferences, that follows the previous ones held in Vienna in, 2001, 2004, 2010 and 2015.

Since its establishment, the IAEA has continued to support countries in achieving a high level of operational safety and excellence in the management of nuclear power plants and other facilities.
