Joint IAEA–French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission Workshop on Muon Tomography: From Basic Principles to Practical Usage and Applications

17 – 28 Jun 2024
Gif-sur-Yvette, France
Event code: EVT2205744

The use of muons produced at the Earth's atmosphere as radiation source for the scanning of big structures is usually referred to as muography. This technique was proposed soon after the atmospheric muons discovery and has been the basis of several experiments, like the Chephren pyramid muography attempt carried out by Alvarez in the 1970s. However, the range of applications of this technique has been broadened in the last years. This has been mainly due to the advances on the particle detectors used to reconstruct muon events as well as to the improvements on the associated analysis techniques. Thus, different muography measurements have been done for such various applications as vulcanology, archaeology, geotechnics, civil engineering or nuclear safety.

This training workshop aims to:

  • Give a general introduction about muography, its principles, methods and applications.
  • Introduce trainees to the instrumentation used in the muography setup of the host institute.
  • Discuss the various modes of operation of the muography technique.
  • Introduce trainees to the data treatment and image production procedures with the aim to showcase the potential of muography for various applications.
