IAEA Hosts International Conference to Promote Women in Nuclear Science

The International Atomic Energy Agency will host the 23rd Women in Nuclear Global Annual Conference: Women in Nuclear Meet Atoms for Peace from 24 to 28 August 2015.The Conference, organised in cooperation with the Agency, will take place at the IAEA’s Vienna headquarters and is expected to bring together more than 450 participants from about 100 countries and international organizations. Panels will feature high-level speakers from the IAEA as well as representatives of national governments, regulatory bodies, research centres, non-governmental organizations, and the nuclear industry. The Conference programme includes plenary meetings and topical sessions as well as technical tours.

Women in Nuclear (WiN) Global is a worldwide non-profit association made up of mostly female professionals working in the various fields of nuclear energy and radiation applications. WiN Global has approximately 25,000 members from more than 100 countries and aims to promote understanding and public awareness of the benefits of nuclear and radiation applications.

Open to accredited journalists throughout the week, the Conference will touch on topics including:

  • Career development of women in nuclear-related fields
  • Nuclear applications
  • Nuclear energy, environment, and climate change
  • Safeguards and non-proliferation

Keynote speakers at the opening session include IAEA Deputy Director General Janice Dunn Lee; Se-Moon Park, President of WiN Global; Eva Gyane, President of WiN IAEA; Corey Hinderstein, Senior Coordinator for the Nuclear Security Summit and Non-proliferation Policy Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy; Martina Schwaiger, Managing Director of Austria’s Seibersdorf Laboratory; Olga Algayerova, Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the International Organizations in Vienna.

Press Opportunities

  • All Conference sessions are open to the press. A programme is available on the conference website.
  • IAEA Deputy Director General Janice Dunn Lee will deliver opening remarks in Board Room B/M1, at 9:50 a.m. on 25 August.
  • Journalists are invited to attend the signing event of the WiN Declaration for the Earth Climate in the M-Building, Room M1/B, at 2:50-3:00 p.m. on 25 August. The declaration is a major component of the “Nuclear for Climate” global initiative that will be presented during the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference.
