Background

The IAEA’s Statute authorizes the Agency to establish standards of safety to protect health and minimize danger to life and property — standards that the IAEA must apply to its own operations, and that a State can apply by means of its regulatory provisions for safety.

The IAEA safety standards are the global reference for protecting people and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation. They constitute an integrated, comprehensive, and consistent set of up-to-date, user friendly and fit-for-purpose safety standards of high quality, which through their use and application in the Member States contribute to the establishment of a worldwide harmonized high level of protection for people and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

Recent Examples, which are relevant also for non-nuclear member states, are:

The Safety Guide on Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment (GSG-8) provides generic guidance on the application of the requirements of IAEA in relation to the protection of members of the public in planned, existing and emergency exposure situations and protection of the environment that is applicable for all facilities and activities.

The Safety Guide Regulatory Control of Radioactive Discharges to the Environment (GSG-9) provides recommendations on the application of the IAEA safety requirements to the regulatory control of discharges and takes account of the recommendations provided in several relevant Safety Guides and the experience of Member States.

The Safety Guide Prospective Radiological Environmental Impact Assessment for Facilities and Activities (GSG-10) provides recommendations and guidance on the general framework for performing prospective radiological impact assessments for facilities and activities, to estimate and control the radiological effects on the public and the environment.

Objectives

The objective of this webinar is to provide a short overview of three IAEA safety standards GSG-8, GSG-9 and GSG-10. It will be of interest to governments, regulatory bodies, operating organizations and other parties with responsibilities for directing, planning or undertaking the management of radioactive waste, or involved in the remediation of sites or areas and contributing to the recovery process for areas affected by past activities or events. It will also be of interest to suppliers to such organizations of safety related services and products that support radioactive waste management.
