Management of radioactivity in drinking water including radon

Webinar
30 October 2019

Recorded broadcast →

Presenters: Francesco Bochicchio
Date of broadcast: 30 October 2019, 3:30 pm CET

Organized jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO)

About the webinar

The World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Drinking-Water quality (GDWQ) serve as an international reference point for countries to develop drinking water quality regulations and standards. The GDWQ’s chapter 9 provides guidance on radiological aspects of drinking water. In 2018, WHO published Management of radioactivity in drinking-water, which offers additional guidance to support radionuclide management in drinking-water in emergency and non-emergency situations. It takes into account the experience and knowledge gained with implementation of WHO guidance on radiological aspects included in the GDWQ.

In this webinar, the WHO will provide an overview of the guidance document. Francesco Bochicchio, a radon expert from Italy, will share in-depth information on measuring methods and management of radon in drinking-water, based on the guidance and experience. Participants will have an opportunity to share their experiences with managing radionuclides in drinking water, including radon and research needs.

Learning objectives

During the webinar, participants will learn about:

  • How radon gets into drinking-water
  • Patterns of population exposure to radon in drinking water
  • Considerations for establishing national standards for radon in drinking water
  • Considerations for monitoring radon in drinking-water in brief: sampling techniques and measuring methods, including critical issues
  • Options for managing radon in drinking water

About the presenter

Francesco Bochicchio has extensive research and consulting experience on ionising radiation, radon and their health effects. He is the head of the National Center for Radiation Protection and Computational Physics of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the director of the WHO Collaborative Center on Radiation and Health. Other positions he has held include: coordinator of the Italian National Radon Action Plan; contributor to the WHO International Radon Project and the WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon; responsible for the transposition and implementation in Italy of the Directive 2013/51/Euratom on radioactivity in drinking water; member of Euratom Art.31 Group of Experts on radioprotection, and head  of the National Center for Radiation Protection and Computational Physics of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
