Nuclear Energy Side Events at the 63rd IAEA General Conference

The IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) will host five side events and nine "ESPACE" presentations during the 63rd IAEA General Conference, to be held in Vienna from 16–20 September 2019.

Our events are open to all registered participants of the General Conference, including representatives of the media and NGOs.

Our exhibition on “IAEA Assistance for a Sustainable Energy Future”, on the first floor of the M Building (Exhibition Area 1), will present an overview of the IAEA’s activities in the area of nuclear energy. It will showcase the role of nuclear power in mitigating climate change and feature IAEA activities on research reactors and the safe management of radioactive waste. Visitors can also try out our new ‘PowerInvest’ app and learn how decisions in the energy sector impact a country’s economy and greenhouse gas emissions.

Nuclear Operators’ Forum: Challenges and Solutions for the Sustainable Management of the Nuclear Supply Chain 

Tuesday, 17 September 2019, 9:30-11:00, Conference Room C4, C Building, 7th floor

This forum will provide an opportunity for Member States to share and discuss current and future challenges related to the management of the nuclear supply chain. It will cover management, quality, oversight, regulation, sustainability, innovative technologies, suspect items, spare parts and reliability of the nuclear supply chain in Member States with operating nuclear power plants. IAEA Support to Environmental Remediation Projects

This side event will showcase successful environmental remediation initiatives supported by the IAEA and highlight partnership opportunities. It will also celebrate the tenth anniversary of the IAEA Network on Environmental Management and Remediation (ENVIRONET) and announce the First IAEA International Conference on the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) in Industry. Options to Manage Spent Fuel from Research Reactors

This event will introduce management options for spent fuel from research reactors and the criteria used to compare the options. It will feature a real time simulation of decision support tools developed during a coordinated research project to assist Member States in selecting a suitable management strategy among several options. Reactor Technology Innovation to Support Integration of Renewable Energy Systems and Nuclear Installations

Nuclear power reactors are often perceived as baseload providers only, but some are already contributing to grid stability through load following. This event will highlight technology innovations required to better complement intermittent renewables, especially in the light of climate change concerns. An INPRO Service to Member States: Analysis Support for Enhanced Nuclear Energy Sustainability

This event will present services provided by the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) to Member States in developing a long term vision for deployment of existing and innovative nuclear energy technologies, including fuel cycle facilities.

Nuclear Power Reactor Spent Fuel Management: 30 Years of Research

Monday, 16 September 2019, 14:30-15:00, ESPACE M01, M Building 1st floor

This event will provide an overview of the findings of two IAEA series of coordinated research projects on Behaviour of Spent Power Reactor Fuel during Storage (BEFAST) and Spent Fuel Performance Assessment and Research (SPAR) and introduce a recent publication collating all the findings.

Global Status of Decommissioning

This event will provide an overview of a new IAEA collaborative project to share information on existing decommissioning plans and projects and their status, including recent achievements and future challenges in this area.

IAEA Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) Turns 50: The World’s Leading Information System on Nuclear Power Reactors

Delegates will have the opportunity to learn more about the IAEA’s Power Reactor Information System, which provides information on nuclear power reactors in operation, under construction, planned or permanently shut down worldwide. PRIS allows to generate global and reactor specific statistics, reports or graphs on nuclear energy status, performance and trends.

Presentation of the IAEA Nuclear Communicator's Toolbox

This event will present the newly launched IAEA Nuclear Communicator’s Toolbox, which offers tools to support effective communication on the benefits and risks associated with nuclear technologies.

Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) and DSRS-Net

This event will launch the DSRS-Net web-platform and feature a hands-on demonstration of handling disused sealed radioactive sources.

IAEA Knowledge Management Assist Visit

This side event will present methodologies, tools and examples of the IAEA Knowledge Management Assist Visit (KMAV) to organizations dealing with non-nuclear-power applications.

IAEA Operation and Maintenance Assessment for Research Reactors (OMARR) Review Service

This event will present the benefits and methodology of the IAEA Operation and Maintenance Assessment for Research Reactors (OMARR) mission and will also present the Research Reactor Ageing Database.

Capacity Building in Energy Planning and its Application for Addressing Sustainable Development and Climate Change Targets

This event will describe the IAEA programme for capacity building in energy planning and experience in its implementation. It will also present IAEA analytical tools for energy planning.
