Mr Abdykalyk Rustamov, Director of the State Agency on Environment Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Mr Dazhu Yang, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, signed Kyrgyzstan's Country Programme Framework (CPF) for the period of 2018-2023 on 17 September 2018, in the presence of Mr Zhenish Razakov, Vice-Prime-Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic. A CPF is the frame of reference for the medium-term planning of technical cooperation between a Member State and the IAEA and identifies priority areas where the transfer of nuclear technology and technical cooperation resources will be directed to support national development goals.

Kyrgyzstan has been an IAEA Member State since 2003. Its 2018-2023 CPF identifies five priority areas:

  1. Improving the regulatory infrastructure for nuclear and radiation safety;
  2. Radioactive waste management and remediation of the uranium production legacy site;
  3. Improving radioecological monitoring;
  4. Development of capacities in radiation medicine; and
  5. Improving food safety and security.
