World Cancer Day is observed each year on 4 February for us to reminisce and consider the increased global burden that cancer inflicts on people, both poor and rich. See what the IAEA is doing to commemorate World Cancer Day on 2 February, and how you can participate virtually.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8 million cancer-related deaths annually. The IAEA supports global efforts to fight the cancer menace and today as part of the planned cancer awareness programme, the IAEA is hosting a special event — a high-level panel discussion — titled ‘A Roadmap to a Cancer-free World’. The event will take place in the Vienna International Centre (VIC) Conference Room C1 (C building, 2nd floor), from 10:00-12:00 (CET).
The event will be live streamed via the IAEA’s Facebook page, and on the IAEA website.
The special event will be opened by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano alongside high-level keynote speakers, including Her Royal Highness Princess Dina Mired of Jordan, the President-elect of the Union for International Cancer Control, and the Indonesian Minister of Health Nila F. Moeloek. The panel discussion will focus on the ways in which nuclear techniques can support the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and help countries worldwide to achieve better disease management for their patients.
A live tumour board demonstration will also take place from 14:00-15:30 (CET) at VIC Conference Room, C1. A group of doctors and health specialists from multiple disciplines will discuss a case and share expertise to determine the best possible cancer treatment plan for a patient. The afternoon session will also provide examples of successful IAEA cancer projects across the world.
In addition, a health fair has been organised at the VIC Rotunda from
12:00-14:00. A dermatologist will offer skin checks. Visitors can also get advice and information from medical specialists about screenings and treatment possibilities for breast and prostate cancer, as well as information about screening for colon cancer and colonoscopy procedures.
