National Workshop on Radiation Protection and Optimization of Patient Exposure in Imaging

Forty-two physicians, medical physicists, radiographers and members of the regulatory authority attended a five day workshop to enhance their skills in radiation protection and optimization. The workshop has been organized by the IAEA under Technical Cooperation Project SRL9010.

The participants were provided both didactic training and demonstration by the medical physicist’s experts in the area of dose measurement in CT and fluoroscopy. Participants were able to measure the radiation dose from imaging equipment and learn how to use dose reduction techniques that allow the radiation images to be optimized. Participants were encouraged to develop the protocols to measure the estimated radiation dose given to patients in both CT examination and fluoroscopic procedures. With this new knowledge, the medical physicist can begin the process of determining the diagnostic reference levels for different radiological procedures.
