IAEA conference to focus on effective regulatory systems for nuclear safety and security

6/2016
Vienna, Austria

More than 200 senior officials and experts from around the world are expected to attend an IAEA conference next week on effective regulatory systems for nuclear safety and security as well as radiation safety.

Participants in the 11-15 April conference – including nuclear regulators  from Member States and representatives of international organisations - will discuss the strengthening of such systems and future challenges and actions.

The conference coincides with the 10th anniversary of the launch of IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) missions and provides an opportunity to examine the experiences of Member States in implementing lessons learned from these expert peer reviews. IRRS missions are designed to strengthen the effectiveness of national nuclear regulatory infrastructures. By early May, the IAEA will have conducted a total of 76 IRRS missions since 2006.

The conference is open to media. It starts at 14:30 on Monday in Board Room A of the Vienna International Centre’s M-Building. Speakers at the opening session include IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, Hua Liu, Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety of China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Vice Administrator of the National Nuclear Safety Administration of China, Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Gustavo Caruso, Director of the Office of Safety and Security Coordination, IAEA, and Shridhar Chande, India, member of the International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG).

Speakers at the closing session on Friday morning include Mr. Liu and IAEA Deputy Director General Juan Carlos Lentijo, Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security.

Journalists interested in interviewing conference speakers or participants are encouraged to contact the IAEA press office.

More information is available at the conference website.
