Representatives from the IAEA, the European Commission and the European External Action Service reviewed and strengthened nuclear-related cooperation at their third annual Senior Officials Meeting in Luxembourg this week.

The gathering provided a renewed opportunity to exchange concrete ideas on bolstering cooperation in the areas of nuclear safety, nuclear security, safeguards, nuclear applications, and research and innovation in nuclear energy.

In addition, new areas for joint activities were identified, including closer cooperation in education and training, activities in the area of nuclear safety, security, emergency preparedness and response as well as economic modelling of energy systems.

Continuous European Union support for a variety of IAEA activities has delivered concrete and visible achievements, including through the implementation of assistance projects on a global scale. In the area of nuclear applications for sustainable development, participants in the meeting agreed to further explore the potential for maximizing achievements through enhanced cooperation.

The next Senior Officials Meeting is scheduled to take place in Vienna in early 2016.
