The IAEA is prepared to assist Brunei Darussalam, one of its newest members, in expanding the use of nuclear techniques for the welfare of its population, said IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in Bandar Seri Begawan last week.
During his two-day visit Mr Amano discussed cooperation in the development of a comprehensive cancer care strategy, the use of nuclear techniques in agriculture, and the building of regulatory capacity in Brunei.
Brunei joined the IAEA on 18 February 2014 and appointed a National Liaison Officer to work with the IAEA and explore the development of technical cooperation projects last July.
Mr Amano met with Minister of Energy Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Health Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Sraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Lim Jock Seng and other senior government officials. He also visited the Brunei Cancer Center and the Brunei Agricultural Research Centre.
Brunei was the final stop on Mr Amano's five-country tour of Southeast Asia. He also visited Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.
