As part of its commitment to creating quality bibliographic records, the IAEA Lise Meitner Library began using a universal standard to improve its services by increasing the searchability function of its collection.
The MAchine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) organization code is used to show that the IAEA Lise Meitner Library either created or modified a bibliographic record. It also helps to present its print and online collections more effectively on platforms such as WorldCat, which is the world's largest network of library content and services.
By using the code in its records, the IAEA Lise Meitner Library is able to show its contributions in the development or modification of records that may be used by other libraries. Moreover, this approach will assist the IAEA Library in its endeavours to take part in future cooperative cataloguing projects.
“Being a specialized library in all areas of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and its applications, the IAEA Library provides support to government organizations, nuclear research institutes and laboratories, as well as nuclear information centres and Member State libraries,” said Dobrica Savić, Head of the IAEA’s Nuclear Information Section.
“By adopting the MARC-code, we are hoping to provide an additional platform of access to our collection.”
The MARC-code can also be used to indicate that a particular item can be found in the IAEA Lise Meitner Library’s collection, including books, journals, technical reports and conference proceedings.
This makes it easier for staff of government organizations, nuclear research institutes and laboratories, nuclear information centres and libraries in IAEA Member States to locate items of interest and to request inter-library loans through their own libraries
