A team of IAEA and international experts will review Japan's decommissioning work at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station during a mission to be held from 9 to 17 February 2015.
The 15 experts taking part in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission will meet officials from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy and TEPCO, the operator of the plant that was struck by a tsunami in 2011. The team also will visit the Fukushima Daiichi site to observe decommissioning work and progress first-hand.
The IAEA Review Mission on Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap towards the Decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1-4 takes places at the request of the Japanese Government and aims to review decommissioning done so far and look at challenges ahead. The review is based on IAEA Safety Standards and other safety and technical advice.
The mission will provide advice on safety and technological aspects of decommissioning, waste management and other related activities, as well as on the planning and implementation of decommissioning and pre-decommissioning work. The mission also will review progress achieved since two earlier IAEA decommissioning missions to Japan, held in April 2013 and November to December 2013.
The team will be led by Juan Carlos Lentijo, Director of the IAEA Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology. Mr Lentijo also led the two previous decommissioning missions.
The team will deliver a preliminary summary report to the Japanese Government at the end of the mission, with a final version to follow later. For reports from the earlier missions, please see:
