On 16 September 2013, the IAEA's 57th General Conference approved by acclamation the appointment of IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano to a second four-year term of office, which will commence on 1 December 2013.
After the General Conference approved the appointment, the General Conference President, Ambassador Mfundiso Mabhongo, South Africa's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, invited the Director General to take the oath of office.
The Director General expressed his thanks for the Member States' support and for the trust they have extended to him. He said he was deeply honoured by the Member States' decision to renew his mandate for another term. The full text of the Director General's remarks are available here.
Background
On 6 March 2013, the IAEA Board of Governors had appointed by acclamation the Director General to a second term as Director General, and according to the IAEA Statute had requested the General Conference to approve this appointment.
