IAEA Director General Meets Top Japanese Officials

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano met Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and Japanese Foreign Minister, Fumio Kishida, on separate occasions in Tokyo, Japan, on 9 and 10 January 2013.

On 10 January 2013, Mr. Amano and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met and reconfirmed the close cooperative relations existing between the IAEA and Japan.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Abe expressed appreciation for the important role that Mr. Amano has been playing since he took office as IAEA Director General to tackle various challenges such as the nuclear issues in Iran and the DPRK. Mr. Abe extended his continuous support to the Director General and the IAEA.

For his part, Director General Amano thanked Japan for its continued support, and said that Japan's experience and knowledge should be further utilized to strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime, nuclear safety and security world-wide, and to contribute to the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

A day earlier on 9 January, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and Japanese Foreign Minister, Fumio Kishida, met also in Tokyo, Japan, to discuss various aspects of mutual cooperation, and agreed on furthering this cooperation and collaboration for the future.

During the meeting, Minister Kishida expressed appreciation for the efforts that Mr. Amano has made since he took office as IAEA Director General to tackle difficult challenges, such as the nuclear issues in Iran and the DPRK. Mr. Kishida extended his continuous support for the activities of the IAEA.

Director General Amano, for his part, said the IAEA would continue to play a leading role in international efforts to strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime, nuclear safety and security, and in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.
