During his two-day visit to Armenia, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano met the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edward Nalbandian. Their discussions included the IAEA's cooperation with Armenia in ensuring nuclear safety and security. The Armenian officials also described plans to construct a new nuclear power plant.

In his meeting with the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan, the Director General discussed the IAEA's technical support to strengthen nuclear safety at Armenia's currently operating nuclear power plant and to expand Armenia's national capacity to train skilled personnel.

During the course of his stay, the Director General also visited the nuclear power plant Metsamor, and was briefed on the on-going efforts to increase safety and security at the plant.

Background
